5th XI Report 2009

Played: 7; W: 5; L: 2

After going missing on their journeys in 1997 the 5th XI returned in 2009 for a short stint in the middle months of the summer. The first game of the season saw the 5s travel to Old Whitgiftians and the captain start a run of losing the toss that would last the whole season. The game involved 479 runs and finished with the 5s claiming their first win.

The season included some memorable batting performances by Jasraj Sanghera (261 runs in the season) and Mark Smith (130), who together put on some big partnership just when the team needed them including an impressive 192 against Hampton Hill. Other notable contributions came from Rishi Ghatore (108) and Nick Ashton (80). Ashleigh Armel-Close and Ryan Croxan deserve a mention for their mature batting display to secure the win against Kingstonian.

Bowling performances of the season include: Dilget Gaurav (9 wickets in the season), who in his first game returned figures of 5 for 15; and Nick Ashton (14), who on three occasions picked up four wickets in a game. They were well supported by Mark Fleckney (4), who was plagued with injury towards the end of the season, Farhan Boota (6), Matthew Frost (6) and everyone else who bowled.

I’d like to thank Chris Evans for arranging the fixtures, Robert Evans for finding us a home ground at Long Lane, David Frost for umpiring in our games and Mark and Elaine Doggett for all their help.

All games were played in a good spirit and enjoyed by all; it has been a pleasure to captain the side. Hopefully the Club will continue to grow from strength to strength and the success of fielding a 5th team will continue next year.

Daniel Simper, 5th XI Captain
