2nd XI Sunday and Non League Report 2006

This year the Ashford’s Sunday 2s won its somewhat truncated Thameside Sunday League. Competing with Egham and Byfleet and scheduled to play each other three times, we finished with the same number of wins (three) as Byfleet. However, thanks to our better runs per wicket ratio we topped the table at the end of the summer.

Two of the wins came against Egham, one home one away. At home the team posted an excellent 240 for 6, thanks to knocks from Jon White (69*) and skipper James Knill (64). In reply Egham could only manage 204 for 6. Egham got their revenge in a second home game but in the deciding away match we set Egham 245, John Swain scoring 50 and young wicket-keeper batsmen Dan Rose made 40. An inspired spell of bowling from David Merchant Snr (4 for 31) then ensured Egham were all out for 171.

Our first game against Byfleet saw young James Wheeler score an excellent 66 in a win at Short Lane. Unfortunately, the away fixture was one of two against Byfleet that were abandoned – in this case a real pity because we were 154 for 4 off just 25.1 overs.

As well as those players mentioned here there were other good performances – batting, bowling and fielding – from many other players in these and the friendly matches. I would like to thank all those enthusiastic players who turned out for me on Sundays. And thanks too to Rosemary for the teas and to everyone else who supported the team this summer. Cheers!
