Ladies Cricket Report 2002

Ashford Ladies had very high hopes for the 2002 season. There had been several very encouraging performances in 2001, there was a "membership" list seemingly well into the teens, a fixture list of 12 games and the promise of an experienced coach to provide much needed guidance and technical expertise.

Unfortunately despite some excellent coaching from Enid Bakewell, supported on occasions by Sharon Eyers, and including two weeks by Melanie Jones (Australia), the membership dwindled. There was no one cause for this but many of the girls who had played for the previous two seasons were now unavailable.

Consequently only three matches of the twelve arranged were possible (none of these were played with a full complement by either side). It seemed that some opponents were having equal difficulty in filling their sides particularly on Saturday mornings!

However, there were some very encouraging performances and the improvements in some of the players was very evident. Katrina Lambert showed much promise and young Jordan Moss is a prospect for the future.

Angharad Purser played on her return from University but her studies unfortunately cut her Ashford season short. The more experience Sarah Cooke, Bethan Evans and Kim Bacon played and trained regularly but without an influx of new members, it is going to be very difficult in 2003.

Ashford Ladies will continue for next season and the Club is working hard with Sharon Eyers and supporting Active Sport to provide the much-needed impetus to the Ladies section. The answer has to come from the local schools where the Club and its plans can be promoted and where there is the possibility to "develop" new members from a much younger age.
