Peter Smith - Life Member ACC

It is with great sadness that Ashford Cricket Club announce the passing of Peter Smith aged 88; a long-standing member for more than 60 years.

Peter was a father, husband, grandfather, great grandfather and a life member of Ashford Cricket Club. In his time at Ashford he was captain of the 2nd XI for three seasons from 1967 – 1969, he won the Guvnor’s Cup in 1969, he was an enthusiastic Colts’ Manager for many years, he was groundsman at Woodthorpe Road ground for many seasons and he was an ever-present member both on and off the field at Ashford Cricket Club.

In the 50s, 60s and 70s he was a regular player for the Saturday 2nd XI and the Sunday 1st XI but he was also good enough to play occasional Saturday 1st XI cricket; his leg-spin was known to baffle many an opponent. Although he had not been around Ashford in recent years since his move to Bridport, he was welcomed on his occasional visits to Short Lane to see his boys and he was regularly seen during the Devon Tour.

He will be much missed and our deepest sympathies go to his wife Zara and to Stephen, Gordon, Mark and Neil and all the grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral Arrangements

The funeral is confirmed for Thursday October 12th at 13:20 at Yeovil Crematorium, Bunford Lane, Yeovil BA20 2EJ. The family has requested no flowers but donations to Alzheimer's Society. Peter himself had requested that attendees should not wear anything formal.

A wake will follow the service at The Anchor, Salway Ash, Bridport, DT6 5HU.
