Ashford is excluded from the Evening Standard Competition
A brief letter from the Evening Standard Tournament
Director, David Willis, shocked Ashford Cricket Club with the news that they had been
excluded from next year's tournament. "We have based our decision on a variety of
factors but geographical location and performance record over the past few years have been
amongst the most significant factors"!
No-one can deny that Ashford's performance record has not
been good recently but the Club is not sure what is wrong with its geographical location.
Has it moved?
The Club is sending a letter of appeal to David Willis.

Ashford loses a Life Member
It is with deep regret that Ashford
has to announce the death of Don Beckett on Tuesday, August 22, 2000.
Don was a Life Member of Ashford Cricket Club; he played
for many years during the 60s and 70s. He was also a loyal supporter of
Ashford Sports Club in general and had served on the Board of Directors.
Don was not only a player, he also did an enormous amount
of work off the field and during his career he held various committee roles at the Club.
He was 1st XI captain on numerous occasions, Cricket Club President in 1999,
Chairman of Ashford Sports Club and even Secretary of the Surrey Championship.
Everyone at Ashford will miss Don and we offer our deepest
sympathies to his wife Jean and to his sons, Graham, Tony and Ollie.

The Surrey Championship season began well for the 1st XI
with a convincing win against relegation candidates Purley. The 2nd XI gained a losing
draw at Worcester Park while the 4th XI went down at home to Long Ditton in their
inaugural Wey Valley League match.
Friday, April 21
Damp Opening
The season began with a damp fixture against touring
Plymouth University on Good Friday. Three new boys all excelled as Ashford overcame the
tourist comfortably.
Terry Crittenden, recently recovered from jet lag, and ex
Ashford Hockey Club's Clint Aitken both showed their capabilities with the bat to each
score 62 on the artificial wicket at Ashford. Kevin Lambert then surprised the Students
with a blistering spell of 6 for 14 to destroy any chance of a close finish. Ashford ran
out easy winners.
The prosects for the remainder of the weekend look very dim
after further rain.

Digger Barnes Returns
To the great surprise of everyone at Ashford(!!), Digger
Barnes, 1st XI captain for the last two seasons, is to cut short his stay in Australia and
return to England. He will be back in Ashford before the start of this year's league
campaign. The lure of Short Lane proved too much after all.
The Club has had to take extraordinary measures to ensure
his safe return and to help him pack his bags. There was some early concern that he might
end up back in Ashford but kitless! To allay these fears, Stewart Fry has been despatched
to Merewether at great expense, to ensure he brings all his kit and dirty washing home.
The whole club is looking forward to welcoming him back on
May 2.

(Players, male or female, supporters, parents, juniors etc.)
The venue is Ashford Sports Club, Short Lane, Stanwell. (7.15pm meet, for a 7.30pm start).

Terry Crittenden signs for Ashford
Ashford Cricket Club has announced that Terry Crittenden will be its overseas signing for
the 2000 season. Terry plays for Hamilton Wickham, a Club from Newcastle in NSW,
Australia, arch rivals of Merewether CC.
Duncan McIlveen (Merewether CC) who has been Ashford's overseas player for the past two
season returned to Australia with a mission. To identify a suitable candidate for 2000. By
all accounts he has achieved this with flying colours. Duncan states "he's a left arm
opening bowler who swings it both ways. He opens the bowling for the Newcastle
Representative side with me but he bats better than me. He's a good bloke and he will get
on well at Ashford".
Terry and Duncan have been friends since their schoolboys days and they have grown up
together playing cricket. They both play for the Newcastle Senior Representative side
along with ex Staines & Laleham player, Jamie Brazier. Terry 49 wickets last season at
an average of 12.5 while also scoring 380 runs at an average of 29.2. Hamilton Wickham
came second in the competition last season and are currently in second place this year.

New President for Ashford Cricket Club
There was enormous disappointment at the AGM in November 1999 when no candidate was
nominated for the prestigious position of Club President. Since then, the Committee has
been very active, particularly over the past few weeks, identifying and negotiating with
various possible candidates.
The Committee's first choice has now agreed to take up the post with immediate effect.
I am therefore very pleased to announce that Peter
Ash (Cricket Club Life Member and a playing member for many years) has
accepted the offer to be President of ACC for year 2000.
I am sure the whole Club wish Peter every success for his reign as President and look
forward to working with him to ensure the future of Ashford Cricket Club. |
